Martin Awarded Fellowship
Montgomery, AL, October 20,
2004 -- Dr. J. Davis Martin, Ph.D. was
awarded the status of Fellow with the American Academy of
Traumatic Stress. The Academy is a multidisciplinary network of
professionals who are committed to the advancement of
intervention for survivors of trauma. The Academy aims to
identify expertise among professionals, across disciplines, and
to provide meaningful standards to those who work regularly with
survivors. Fellow is the highest honor the Academy can bestow on
a member. This designation is awarded to Diplomates who have
made significant contributions to the field and to the academy.
Dr. Martin will be featured in the Academy's November
Dr. Martin is a Forensic
Consultant who works in a variety of settings. She has a long
history of volunteering, beginning when she was 16 years old.
She has worked from the housing projects of Trenton, NJ to the
courts of the Southeast. Dr. Martin has worked with Vietnam and
Gulf War veterans in the field of posttraumatic stress. She has
been sought out to speak on areas such as survivors of childhood
sexual abuse, bereavement, abuses of the foster care system, and
others. She has worked with therapeutic and regular foster
children, abuse victims, victims of violent crimes, and more.
She has been involved with law enforcement agencies on a local,
state, and federal level.
Dr. Martin served in the US Army
where she was a photojournalist and editor. She was also tasked
with investigating personnel deaths.
Dr. Martin graduated Summa Cum
Laude and at the top of her class from St. Leo University and
received her Masters and Ph.D. from Mississippi State
University. She is a freelance editor and author as well as a
published author (fiction) and poet.
She has created many Public
Service Announcements (PSAs) for all forms of media. Two years
ago, while state president of the Alabama Therapeutic Foster
Care Providers Association (ATFCPA), she developed, organized,
and led a suitcase campaign to collect suitcases for Alabama's
foster children, ultimately collecting over 5,000 suitcases for
distribution. She has recently founded a nonprofit agency (Kidz,
Inc.) to meet the needs
of Alabama's foster children through a grassroots approach.
Dr. Martin is a Diplomate of the
American College of Forensic Examiners and the American
Psychotherapy Association. She is also a Certified Forensic
Counselor and Certified Sentence Mitigation Specialist.
